Choosing a Door

When selecting a patio door, keep in mind the area you live in and the type of weather you experience. Areas with colder winters may want doors that insulate better. Also ensure that the doors have good sealing materials to keep in either the hot or cold temperatures. Screen doors should seal tightly as well.

You should understand that cabinet stain sits on the surface of the cabinets, rather than soaking into the wood like paint. Therefore you do need to remove the old stain before applying the new stain.

Take your cabinets apart using a screwdriver to remove knobs, hinges and other hardware. Place the cabinet door and other cabinet pieces on newspaper pieces.

Using a hand-held sander take of the finish of the cabinet, using a rough sandpaper grade. You will need to sand completely down to bare wood. Follow this up with another sanding using a fine-grade sandpaper. This will smooth out the surface of the cabinets.

Be sure to wear rubber gloves during the staining process. Apply the stain to the cabinets. If you can paint the cabinets with the pieces in a horizontal position. The stain should sit for about 60 seconds or so and then you should wipe off the excess stain using rags. Do this for all sections of your cabinets.

You will need to let the cabinets and their new stain dry overnight or longer. Apply a light coat of polyurethane. You will need to let this coat dry for two hours. You then can apply a second coat of polyurethane, followed by another two-hour drying time. You can keep repeating this process until you have achieved the type of surface look you desire.

After applying the final coat of polyurethane, let the cabinets dry overnight or longer. Reassemble the cabinets. You may want to consider new door pulls and hardware to complete the updated look.

-Accurately measure the room. Use a tape measure to determine the width and length of the room and apply the proper calculations to get the total square footage of your room.

- Purchase your flooring at a retail home improvement store such as Lowes or Home Depot. Bring your measurements and consult with a sales person. Measurements of how much floor can be covered with a box of laminate is generally on the box. Choose dimension that will effectively eliminate weird sizing” you don’t want 1/2-inch strips on one side.

- Purchase a type of cushion or padding that will go under the laminate flooring. These underlayment types come in different materials and thicknesses and different costs.

- Prepare and repair your subfloor if necessary.

- Put down the underlayment as per manufacturer’ instructions.

-Place the first laminate piece in your chosen starting corner, followed by a second piece placed at the end of the first. Tap them to ensure a good fit. Continue in this manner until the first”run”  is completed. Make sure the pieces are fitting together in a snug way. However don’t hit the pieces too hard or you may break them.

- When starting the second “run” cut the first piece so that is shorter and the seams won’t match up so it will look like a hardwood floor.

-Continue repeating until you reach the end of the room. You may need to make some minor cuts and adjustments on the last run.

- Finish up by installing baseboards and any required thresholds for doors.
